Yeah yeah, sit up straight. We’ve all heard it before.

Yet, text neck is still rampant. So rampant that young people are growing horns on the back of their heads. A sensational 2018 study showed extensive x-ray evidence of young people developing lumps at the back of their skull from the pull of their neck muscles and ligaments constantly straining against forward head posture. Despite us "knowing" we should sit up straight, most of us don’t. It’s like flossing.

I want to talk briefly about the power of posture, why it’s more important than you think, and why remote trauma release, remote emotional release, and remote somatic therapy can be powerful tools for correcting it without physical input. Understanding the importance of posture improvement and how to enhance it will empower you to live a life of greater health and presence.

Posture Is More Than Aesthetics

Your posture affects EVERY physiological function in your body. A 2005 study of 750 subjects evaluated x-rays and plumb line measurements to assess the balance of their spinal curves. They showed that all measures of health status decreased as postural deviations increased—from heart rate to breathing to overall health to disability. Other studies have clearly demonstrated how posture impacts mood, digestion, hormonal levels, resilience to stress, and energy state.

It’s an Energy Issue, Not Just a Spine Issue

Simply put, when your posture is distorted, you are less connected, less efficient, less energetic, and less healthy. "90% of the stimulation to the brain is generated by movement of the spine," said Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize recipient. He added, "better than 90% of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body in its gravitational field. The more mechanically distorted a person is, the less energy available for thinking, metabolism, and healing."

The Fix Lies in the Root Cause—It’s Not Just Physical

Just deciding to sit up straight doesn’t last long—we inevitably slouch back down. And while exercises help, a 2023 meta-analysis showing only a marginal correlation between physical activity and posture improvement suggests it’s more complex. This is because posture is an external reflection of your internal state.

The root cause of bad posture isn’t just tight muscles or sitting too much—it’s stress. When your nervous system runs the “stress” app, that’s how it organizes your body in space. Until you switch this app by addressing stress through in person or remote emotional release, physical efforts will have limited impact.

It’s the stress bound somatically as trauma and unresolved emotions that creates the posture reflecting and reinforcing it. High levels of bound stress lead to poor posture. The more you release, the more your nervous system naturally organizes into an expansive posture—not because you’re forcing it, but because it’s an expression of your true self. That’s why trauma release is critical for posture improvement—it shifts your nervous system from stress to ease. That’s why remote emotional release can have profound impacts on posture, totally at a distance.

How to Get Started with Posture Improvement

I’m not saying corrective exercise isn’t important—it is. But posture improvement is more complex. To enhance your posture, address the emotional component by connecting with the wounded parts of yourself where your mind-body system lacks integrity. Find practices that bring stillness and allow these patterns to surface. I highly recommend working with a practitioner like myself who can facilitate and accelerate this process using remote trauma release and remote somatic therapy.

Even if you’ve tried many approaches before, you can create better posture moving forward. The missing piece was the emotional component. Now, you can build a more vibrant, impactful life—from the inside out.
